Hearing God's Voice: An interview with John Houston : Jennifer Hand

Meet my new friend John Houston. The whole time I was reading His book: Finding My Way Home: A Journey to Discover Hope and a Life of Purpose I was so encouraged by the stories of how John and his family listening and followed the voice of God.

I wonder if you struggle to know what it means to hear God’s voice? Do you think your past disqualifies you from hearing the voice of the Lord?

John’s story as a young child living on his own with his brother — they had to take care of all their emotional and physical needs as an 11-year-old boy. His journey was a difficult one, but He describes how God was with Him the whole time.

We all have a story. God can actually use our lives to add to His story. It’s not our story, it’s His story.

In his book, John takes us on his journey of learning to hear the voice of God. He was in Bible college and realized he still didn’t know what it meant to listen for and hear God’s voice.

How does God speak today?

Through His word.

He encouraged us that He learned to go into prayer, as Go how do you want to speak to me today? Study the Word, then pray and ask God again to speak.

See if what you are hearing lines up with what He speaks in his word.

John has amazing stories of following the voice of God even when it doesn’t make sense or follow a normal path.

Even when it feels scary and looks like a failure will be straight ahead– follow the voice of the Lord.
