Understanding others and yourself better in 2020: An Interview with Beth McCord

It’s the first Monday of 2020.  I mean let’s be honest when I was growing up 2020 sounded just like the Jetson’s era.  (If you are not familiar it was a children’s cartoon that had things like flying cars and a talking robot that did your dishes).

We may not have flying “cars” yet but they are working on cars that drive themselves.  Is anyone else freaked out slightly by this?

Now that I sound like a 90-year-old woman, I want to welcome you to the year 2020!

One of my New Year’s little by little goals this year came from reading the book Becoming Us by Beth McCord.

Yes it is designed to be a marriage book and no I am not married but I found it to be an amazing book to provide tools for us single folks as well in how to relate well with others and to know ourselves better)

In Beth’s chapter 1 she uses the term assumicide.

Assumicide perfectly sums up what we do in our relationships with each other.  It’s when we (incorreclty) believe we know another person’s thoughts, feelings and motivations.  We assume we understand they they are behaving in a particuar way, and then we respond without asking clarifying questions.  Assumicide can lead to “killing” or damaging any relationship.

While reading this I felt a pause in my heart.  How often do I do this?  Assume what another person is thinking or where they are coming from.  Then I write a script in my own mind that may not be the script in theirs at all.

My goal in 2020 #stopthis

Anyone else?

Friends, I cannot wait for you to hear this interview with the very wise and encouraging Beth McCord.

Allow me to introduce you to her.  Beth is an Enneagram Coach and expert. Don’t worry if the word Enneagram means NOTHING to you, she will tell you all about it in this podcast interview.

My favorite thing is how she takes everything back to the gospel.  She simply uses the Enneagram as a tool to help us understand how God designed us each uniquely.

She wants us to use this as a tool to awaken self-awareness and to provide hope as we look at ourselves and each other.

I think this is an awesome way to start out 2020– to awaken self-awareness and find hope in better relating with others.
