Football Hail Mary’s

Guys, I confessed to you earlier this summer that I was a sport watching poser that somehow found myself obsessed with the Olympics.

Well, I posed again this weekend as someone who knows anything about football.  See I live in the football-obsessed SEC world of Tennessee, and people REALLY get into this stuff.  I mean really.

So I decided Saturday I wanted to be part of the culture and watch the end of the game.

I felt like such a poser.  But I had a pot of chili simmering, the fall candle burning, and the football watching going.

And I watched the last seconds of the last quarter of the Tennessee/GA football game.  My family is from GA so there is kind of this rivalry thing.

And I wished I knew a great deal about football so that I could sound like I know what I am talking about.

But well, I don’t.  So bear with me.

All I know, if frankly there were only seconds left in the game and I thought for sure there was no way Tennessee was going to get a touchdown.

But apparently there is this move that they call the hail mary where they throw the ball really really far and hope for a miracle catch and touchdown in the end zone.. ( I feel so fancy saying all this right now, even though I am probably way off)

And it happened.  They did it and it worked.  The faces of the fans were priceless.

 

He jumped high amidst all these people coming against him and grabbed the ball, and caught it.

Touchdown!

I felt glad I watched that winning moment because everyone would be talking about it.

But it reminded me of a spiritual picture.

Guys, sometimes we think we are about to lose the game.  It seems like the opposition of our enemy, Satan, is going to take us out. That He has all the points, and we cannot catch the winning ball.

The Bible tells us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers of the enemy in Ephesians 6:12

The enemy wants us to think we have lost the struggle to our flesh. To that circumstance.  To that relationship that is just so stinking hard.

But the Lord is always working.  He has the winning game plan.

And even when it is not how we expect it to go down, He has already established victory on the cross.

When He died and rose again, He did what He said He would do.  He took on my sins, defeated the chains of sin and death and WON the battle.

Even when you feel like it’s down to the last minutes in your circumstance, I pray you find encouragement today that Jesus has His hands ready to win.

It may not turn out like we expect, but He is working. He is fighting the battle against sin and darkness FOR US.

We can walk in freedom.

Now that is a touchdown.
