Apples to Apples

I love games.  I love parties where people come together and laugh and enjoy each other.  I love parties especially that involve friends, pizza and games.  Therefore I was a happy girl last night to enjoy a game night at my dear friend TJ’s house.

Insert interjection:  If you want a blessing.. please please go to my friend TJ’s blog at www.writingforhisglory.blogspot.com  She is an amazingly gifted writer (even though I am biased as her best friend I promise you she is!)  She just wrote an incredible post about NO regrets.  And you wont regret reading it .. ok.. end of commercial break.

So right now my family is in the midst of a tough goodbye and I needed a good laugh… and we sure did laugh as we got together  last night to play apples to apples.  Have you ever played?  The basic gist is this:

In the game there are GREEN cards that are Adjectives.. like shown here..

And then there are nouns like shown here.. in red card form

How the game works is each person takes turns being a judge.  The judge draws a green card (adjective from the box)  It could have any sort of word on it.  Some of the ones I won last night American, unhealthy, principled ect.   Everyone who is not the judge picks out of their 7 red cards in their hand a noun they think fits that adjective (I know i know.. don’t lose me in the English language here)  For example say the green card said stinky:  I would put down cow-pies because what’s more stinky then a cow-pie (and I know because I landed in one thrown off a horse one time)

The judge then picks the red card he likes the BEST and that person wins the green card for that round.  So you win by getting the most green cards.
The fun part about this game is you learn to play the judge.  Like TJ learned real quick that hunter and her had the same sense of humor, so she would play funny off the wall ones when He was the judge.  Evelyn was the most sensible judge.. katherine could go either way.. and jenn would always pick the craziest ones that made her laugh the most.

The more you knew the judge the more you could win.  (I will add in the end Hunter won because I picked his card BARNEY for some crazy word that I cannot remember what it was)

I know this may sound crazy but I got a spiritual truth out of this game.

The best way to win is to know the judge
The Bible often refers to the Lord as our judge.
This can be twisted to strike fear into hearts at times.
Many people view God as the type of judge on a big bench upstairs just waiting to condemn.
See that’s not true because Jesus came… (insert big glory)
To take the judgement of sin upon Himself.
To provide freedom from condemnation (romans 8:1)
I believe God longs for us to live in VICTORY.
1 John 5: 4 For whoever is born of God overcomes the world and this is the victory that has overcome the world..
our Faith.
The BEST way I can win,can live a victorious life in THIS earthy life
Even in the midst of trials, struggles, frustrations,
even in joys, good times and peace
the way to WIN
is to know our judge.
The way I know my judge
Read HIS BOOK… who HE declares Himself to be…
Some of my favorites: my Judge is loving, patient, kind, merciful, forgiving, all the things I don’t deserve!!
So let’s get to know the heart of our judge!

  1. What a great Post Jenn! Your writing is getting stronger, and I related to so much as I have viewed God as an angry Judge more times than I can count. We of course know that God does have every right to judge in his holiness, but he chose to bring us that reconciliation through Jesus Christ! Glory! Thank you all so for linking to my blog and for the plug 🙂

  2. THis makes me want to get to know the judge even more. Reading your blog makes me want to love Jesus more. KEep writing!
